Hello there, I'm Artist and Maker of sculptural and functional Ceramics for ‘Keepers’ that want pieces that are authentic and not mass produced.
Be My Keeper had humble beginnings in my gorgeous home studio, where I ran classes and created whilst raising a young family, it got busy and grew dynamically over just a few years...it was time to move. My ceramic works are the culmination of rich travel and cultural experiences, love of family, figurative form and stories, stories that surround and inspire me. Some components of my sculptural work often explore both fond and not so fond memories of my childhood and youth and how this has impacted on my choices in life. My ethnic and religious upbringing have certainly permeated some of figurative pieces. I see these concepts, as a step forward, cathartically breaking away from the rigidness and rules of these early years, using ceramic sculpture as a dialogue for empowerment and freedom, shaking off those extreme expectations of the past. I am driven to explore finishes by drawing and painting on work, I find it satisfying and true as I try to steer clear of the mainstream. Currently, I am interested in looking at form and talking less with some of my work, there is always a challenge to shift and change that I find truly engaging and addictive. My studio Be My Keeper and The Keepers Gallery a thriving little business situated at No 4/39 Smithton Grove, Ocean Grove. The Gallery houses both my work and the work of other local artists. The studio offers weekly ceramic classes any some students have been coming for many years. Ceramic classes include learning techniques such as hand building, wheel work, sculpture and surface decoration. Students can explore a range of methods or focus on their own particular interests, classes are blended to capitalise on both functional and non-functional projects. The studio also holds regular tutored and untutored Life Drawing, also on offer are classes for young people and kids. This is a space to connect with likeminded creatives keeping it as informal or structured as you like. I particularly love seeing the friendships that are cultivated during these sessions, especially when people are so positively engaged.
